Happy Birthday to a long lost love...

Happy Birthday to HMCS Saguenay (DDH 206), my first ship. Launched in July of 1953 Saguenay was commissioned on December 15th, 1956.

I joined Saguenay in January of 1984, fresh out of Comm School Esquimalt. I was a whole 18 years old and the youngest on board. (It would be another 2 and a half years before someone younger joined the ship!) A lot of good memories, great places and good friends from that grand old lady. I certainly shed a few tears when I saw the video of her sinking off Lunenburg Nova Scotia in 1994.

A l'erte

So, BBS, you were "the Kid" onboard. :-)

I have some good memories of my USAF days in my youth, also. I was an aircraft ground tech and most of my enlistment was spent in a Strategic Air Command B-52 wing. Many years later, I was saddened to see photos of the B-52Gs I worked on, now in a boneyard with the wings cut off, due to a bilateral arms reduction treaty with Russia.

Yet, those bombers fulfilled their purpose extremely well for decades-strategic deterrence. And in their peaceful demise were joined by a large number of Bears and TU-22s. Really the best possible outcome and ending for them all.

That aside, the many good personal memories of Service days remain.

(Here's a suggestion: How about a "Share Your Favorite Anecdote With Us" blog column? I'm sure that between all the Torch regulars, there's some pretty good anecdotes to be shared.)

That's just the sort of thing comments threads are for, Dave - good idea!

Feel free to fill in your own here...
