Red Ensign on the Western Front, WW I

Nice images (via bannerman):

PHOTO OF THE DAY

Interesting photo of an occasion when the Canadian Red Ensign was used officially as a national flag. It was, strictly speaking, one of two Canadian "national flags" of that time, including the Royal Union.

This photo shows the dedication of a Canadian Field Artillery memorial on Vimy Ridge in 1918. The unmistakable figure of Sir Arthur Currie stands out among the officers assembled with a chaplain.

An artist's view of the victory parade in Paris in 1918. Note the prominent Canadian Red Ensign that is being carried by our victorious troops. Pictures speak louder than words -- and many words have been expended trying to prove that the Red Ensign was "not seen" in the First World War!

It's a little hard to see in this poor scan, but that is a 1917-18 Red Ensign on Prime Minister Robert L. Borden's car at the left. With any luck a better quality image will be available soon.

More on the Red Ensign here, and a selection Canadian military flags of the twentieth century is here.
