"'Rebalancing' the mission is impossible without security"

Col (Ret) Mike Capstick speaks out about the Afghan mission in an article that serves as a must read from start to finish. It's difficult to pick just one excerpt:

I would like nothing better than to see 90 per cent of Canada's Afghan expenditures devoted to governance and development. The reality is that until the south of the country is stabilized, this will remain a pipe dream. Afghans and those of us with experience on the ground know that "rebalancing" the mission is impossible without security.

If you've ever wanted to know what the troops think, but can't actually say while they still wear the uniform...

Finally, finally, someone is mentioning the "Canadian-values dimension" of our being in Afghanistan. Thank you for your years of service, especially during the dark days of UN service.

BUT, hey, let's NOT continue with the misunderstanding that air power is not precise. Fighter jets with rockets and bullets spraying all around certainly are; including the A10 Warthog. But wouldn't it be comfortable to have a bomber loitering around - a bomber with guided bombs.

Wouldn't take much, just the radio-controlling of the fins as the boom-boom floats down. Low cost for the airplane, low cost for a precision bang (which could even be aborted at the last second), low training cost, low maintenance cost, too high to hit from the ground, and faster into a battle area.
