Who's smart enough to see the truth?
Back in October, I touched upon the "myth of the unlettered grunt."
Bill Graveland of the Canadian Press has followed suit in an article published just today (ht:MediaRight):
I look forward to the day when the intelligence of the Canadian soldier is no longer a newsworthy question for the Canadian press. Hopefully Mr. Graveland's piece has brought us one step closer to that day.
Not only do many of the senior officers (and I mean that precisely: Major through Colonel and their naval equivalents) I know personally have post-grad degrees, they have real-life experience applying the academic to the practical in some of the most rigourous circumstances imaginable. They don't set up shop in the ivory towers of academia, they learn for the express purpose of applying their knowledge.
Bill Graveland of the Canadian Press has followed suit in an article published just today (ht:MediaRight):
Lt. Jason Demaine of Ottawa has two degrees and said he is not alone.
"Most of the guys here are motivated, they enjoy being here and they choose this job because they enjoy it," he said.
"That earlier stereotype is non-existent any more. People may say it and think it but it's just not true," Demaine said, "I'm from a reserve unit back home and I have corporals that have their master's degrees."
I look forward to the day when the intelligence of the Canadian soldier is no longer a newsworthy question for the Canadian press. Hopefully Mr. Graveland's piece has brought us one step closer to that day.
