Afghan detainees: Surely the Liberals showed contempt for international law...

...when their government authorized the signing of a detainee transfer agreement in December 2005 with the Afghan government, an agreement that was demonstrated by early 2007 to provide inadequate safeguards. If one looks at the issue is such terms.

1) US State Department human rights reports on Afstan:

For 2004:
...
The Government's human rights record remained poor; although there were some improvements in a few areas, serious problems remained. There were instances where local security forces and police committed extrajudicial killings, and officials used torture in prisons. Efforts to bring to justice serious human rights offenders were often ineffective; impunity from the law remained a serious concern. Punishment of officials usually took the form of administrative actions rather than prosecution. Prolonged pretrial detention and poor prison conditions led to deteriorating health conditions and death among some prisoners...
For 2003:
...
The TISA [Transitional Islamic State of Afghanistan]and its agents' respect for human rights improved during the year; however, many serious problems remained, especially where its authority was challenged outside Kabul. Members of local security forces committed arbitrary, unlawful, and some extrajudicial killings, and officials used torture in jails and prisons. Prolonged pretrial detention, due to a severe lack of resources in the judicial system, remained a problem. Prison conditions remained poor. Overcrowding and limited food and medical supplies contributed to deteriorating health and even death among prisoners...
2) Human Rights Watch report:

For 2004:
...
Local military and police forces, even in Kabul, have been involved in arbitrary arrests, kidnapping, extortion, torture, and extrajudicial killings of criminal suspects...
How could the Liberal government not have known? And why have our major media not looked up these simple things and reported them?
