The exhibit is titled "We Stand On Guard For Thee." It is divided over two floors of the museum and features the 12 water colour studies prepared by John Horton for the Canadian naval Centennial Art Project that required artists to depict the Navy's history from 1910 to the present. John Horton was one of those asked to submit items for consideration. He was singularly successful as three of his watercolour studies were selected to be among the six official paintings that were unveiled last week in Ottawa.
On the second floor, visitors will experience the evolution of the Navy through its ships, its uniforms, and images reflecting the prestigious history of the Naval Service. There are ships' badges, gun shield art, ship models, "rabbits" or naval folk art, and mementoes. Jan Drent, President of the Maritime Museum of B.C. Board says, "The images and the art evoke memories while in their own way talk about the major events that have shaped our navy from the arrival of HMCS Niobe and Rainbow in 1911, through the First and Second World Wars and Korea, to the unification of the Canadian Forces in 1968, through to present day operations."
The exhibit opens to the public Oct. 23 and runs until Feb. 14, 2010.
