"On board the pirate-hunting HMCS Winnipeg"

A lengthy Globe and Mail story. I must say this seems a bit of stretch to make the mission, er, relevant to Canadians:
...
Cdr. Baines [the Winnipeg's captain] says the rationale behind Canada's deployment in the Gulf is two-fold. First, when NATO calls, Canada must answer, he said. Second, this is a battle fought for the Canadian consumer.

"I believe that what we're doing here has a direct impact on Canadians back home," he said. "So much of the world's goods travel through this area, goods that end up in Canada, in North America. As you can imagine, as this piracy is going on, insurance rates for ships to travel through here, the cost to ship the goods ... these get passed on to the consumer."..
Some earler posts on pirates here, here, here, here, here and here.

the bigger reason is freedom of the seas. your merchant ships and everyone else's should be able to sail the waters across the globe, free of interference. we, the wealthy nations, might be able to absorb the cost increases (why should we have to, though?), but this is a significant burden on developing nations.
