"Flying yesterday's aircraft tomorrow"

Y'know, it feels a bit like picking on an old Hall of Fame running back for having to use a walker in his old age: it's not that he never performed at a high level, it's that he simply has too much mileage on him to perform at that high level now.

The trick to finding the video funny, I've discovered, is to not think too hard about the safety of the aircrews flying the Sea Kings to this day, or the safety of the sailors relying on their Air Det, or even worse, the safety of sailors operating in dicey situations without an Air Det at all.

Jean Chretien, your legacy lives on.

And what a testament to our national spirit that we can all laugh about how we put our best and bravest men and women into harm's way with dilapidated and obsolete equipment that needlessly endangers them and their comrades. I know why the men and women laugh: gallows humour has always been a military mainstay - it keeps you from crying.

But never forget: these are your sons and daughters, your brothers and sisters, your friends and lovers flying these overburdened grey beasts, Canada.

So watch the video, have your chuckle, and then vow to never let such a disgrace happen ever again on your watch as a voter.

Nicely said. The fact that we still require our pilots to fly these delapidated hulks is bloody shameful. It was short-sighted stupidness for Chretien to cancel the contracts at greater expense in the end for the country and greater peril for our pilots. Criminally stupid and shameful.

Agreed. Although if the Cormorants can't shake that faint scent of lemon by getting their tail rotor hub and rotor brake problems ironed out, Chretien is going to look like a genius in retrospect.

Uh, no.

Even with the problems, the EH-101 would have been an improvement over fifteen extra years of the Sea King.
