US to keep command of ISAF
Makes sense, especially in view of their troop increases:
Meanwhile, a Canadian will be in charge at Regional Command South from February--Maj.-Gen. J.G.M. Lessard (the appointment was announced last April, no wonder it's been rather overlooked).
Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates announced today [Jan. 18] that the President has nominated Army Gen. David D. McKiernan for re-appointment to the rank of general and assignment as the commander, International Security Assistance Force. McKiernan is currently serving as the commanding general, U.S. Army Europe and Seventh Army/commanding general, U.S.Army, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Germany. The outgoing ISAF commander is US General Dan K. McNeill.
