Apology
It's never easy, but it was the right thing to do.
Death benefit unlikely to change: minister
Mr. O'Connor called yesterday to make amends, Mr. Dinning said. "He got on the phone and said he just wanted to apologize for the fiasco and the things I had to go through."

Letter just sent to the Globe (similar one sent to the Star yesterday about Campion's story not published):
'Gloria Galloway's story, "Death benefit unlikely to change: minister" (June 5), about the $250,000 (now actually $255,000) death benefit available solely to married soldiers gives only part of the picture. All Canadian Forces members have the Supplementary Death Benefit (two years salary) which goes to the person whom they designate. In addition, members can purchase group life insurance (SISIP) at very reasonable rates. For example, $100,000 coverage is available to a smoker, under 25, for $10.50 a month.
If Master Corporal Dinnings had nominated either parent as beneficiary, that person would get around $90,000 tax free from the Supplementary Death Benefit, plus the life insurance if he had enrolled in that plan.
I find it odd that Ms Galloway did not mention these other benefits that result from the death of a CF member.

I was wondering what the SISIP and SDB coverage was these days. I have found it strange that none of this was mentioned in any of the coverage regarding the Married Death benefit.
BBS: A certain stinking agenda, a certain unwillingness to do any research, and a certain PR incompetence on the part of DND that Babbling has from time to time mentioned.
Have just learned that the Star, bless them (never thought I'd say that), are considering the letter to them).
