"Star Wars" stupidity

A letter sent to the Ottawa Sun but not published:
Greg Weston highlights the reconnaissance capability of Canada's satellite program in his column "Space program morphing"(June 3). He then concludes the column by writing that "...the implications of the militarization of space are enormous, particularly with respect to the risk of sparking a new arms race, and at the very least deserve an open and informed national debate."

But I doubt anything Canada does will contribute significantly to the "militarization" of space or any new arms race there. Mr Weston seems to have overlooked the fact that, in addition to the US and Russia, the following countries already operate military reconnaissance satellites: China, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy and Spain. Other countries with plans to deploy such satellites are: Malaysia, South Africa, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam. Mr Weston should get a grip on his unfounded fears over the effect of anything Canada is doing.

Are we still so obsessed with the paranoia over the "weaponization of space" that we cannot recognize the basic reality that space is, and has been for decades now, weaponized? What else do we call satellites that are used to guide with pinpoint accuracy missiles to their targets, deliver images with quality resolution at one foot above the Earth's surface for targeting terrorists and enemy formations, etc., if they are not weapons?

Space is weaponized and there is simply no going back from that fact. The Canadian media, and those politician who feed them, need to acknowledge this reality.
