CF and RCMP to cooperate in recruiting

Sounds like a good idea.
Under pressure to step up recruiting in the face of Canada's declining birth rate and aging work force, the RCMP and the Canadian Forces have begun working together to achieve their enrolment targets.

A five-page memorandum of understanding between the Mounties and the military, obtained under the Access to Information Act, shows they are sharing resources, staff, multimedia production capabilities, demographic information, survey results, best practices and facilities.

They will also team up for recruiting tours and events. The Strategic Recruiting Partnership, which will run until March, 2009, is the first of its kind between the RCMP and the Forces.

Together they hope to be more effective in competition -- described in internal military documents as "intense and relentless" -- with private industry and other public institutions in the labour market...

According to military planners, starting next year the Forces will need to recruit about 7,800 men and women annually. Recruitment grew to 5,900 last year from 4,200 in 2004.

By last week, the RCMP had signed up 1,358 cadets for 2006-2007 -- its largest intake in the past four years...

While the agreement signals closer co-operation on recruiting matters, representatives of both organizations say operational mandates will not blur or overlap...

No idea what the stats are, Dave. But in my Basic Officer Training Course in the late 80's, we lost about a third of our recruits prior to graduation. I was told at the time that that was a pretty standard rate of attrition for the course.

The directive to allow RCMP officers to serve in the military reserves just got signed last week. I'm surprised this didn't find its way into the article. Knowing that, cooperating in recruiting seems like a really good idea!

Yeah, this is one of those moments where two fairly bureaucratically managed organizations suddenly have an eureka moment.

There should be a whole bunch of really interesting economies of scale that they can bring to bear to save money.

I hadn't heard about the crossover deal allowing RCMP to serve in the CF Reserves. It looks like deals are getting signed all over the place for reservists, as we just entered into a reciprocal agreement regarding reserve service with the Aussies, and also put the finishing touches on a pension plan.
