Blogging advice for politicians

This blog post makes a good teaching point. Laurie Hawn scores well for engagement but fails on the execution.
PARLIAMENTARY DEFENCE SECRETARY LAURIE HAWN TAKES ISSUE WITH DAVID PUGLIESE AND OTHER JOURNALISTS
1. If you're going to engage on a battlefield, get to know the lay of the land first. The US Air Force has a handy flow chart to get started. Pay particular attention to the "Response Considerations".

2. If you're angry or even slightly perturbed when posting, write out your post and save it in Word or Notepad. Wait at least one hour and then review what you just wrote. You'll thank yourself later for doing it, or, you'll develop a skill for retraction and apologies. Choose your preference.

3. Attack the substance, not the author.

4. As they say - you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

5. For government members, consider a consultation or two with Monte Solberg. He gets it.

We've all had a taste of a good size 10 or 12 now and again. The flavour lingers as a subtle reminder for future posts. I commend Laurie Hawn for wading in and hope, contrary to what he says in his post, that this will not be his last foray into online engagement.

Good post, BBS. I fail on this all the time. Of course, I'm also not a politician...
