Afstan: Roto 8 for end of summer, 2009
Here's the composition:
Task Force 3-09 (Joint Task Force Afghanistan, Roto 8) composed of approximately 2500 soldiers will comprise of the following major units:
- A 1000 soldier Battle Group in Kandahar [emphasis added], primarily from the 1st Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (1 PPCLI - Edmonton), which includes:
- Three LAV III Companies and a Reconnaissance Platoon;
- Armoured Squadron [Lord Strathona’s Horse Royal Canadians (LdSH RC) – Edmonton, AB]
- Engineer Squadron to include Armoured Engineer Troop [ 1 Combat Engineer Regiment (1CER)– Edmonton, AB];
- Counter Improvised Explosive Device (CIED) organization [ 1 Combat Engineer Regiment (1CER)– Edmonton, AB];
- Artillery Battery [1 Royal Canadian Horse Artillery (1RCHA)- Shilo, MB];
- Reconnaissance Squadron [Royal Canadian Dragoons (RCD) – Petawawa, ON];
- About 150 soldiers with the Operational Mentor and Liaison Team (OMLT) [emphasis added - MC] [primarily from 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (3PPCLI) – Edmonton, AB]
- About 180 soldiers with the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) [emphasis added]. The company headquarters and two Force Protection Platoons will be sourced from from
2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (2 PPCLI – Shilo, MB), one platoon from 38 Canadian Brigade Group from across Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario] and one platoon from 41 Canadian Brigade Group based out of Calgary, AB.- About 470 CF members with the National Support Element (NSE) in Kandahar, primarily from the 1 Service Battalion (1 Svc Bn) in Edmonton with two Force Protection Platoons drawn from 39 CBG out of Vancouver.
The majority of about 500 Reserve Force soldiers, will come from:
• 39 Canadian Brigade Group (38 CBG) from British Columbia - approximately 125 soldiers;
• 41 Canadian Brigade Group (41 CBG)from Alberta - approximately 125 soldiers;• 38 Canadian Brigade Group (38 CBG) from Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario- approximately 125 soldiers
