Afstan: The US and coming realities in Regional Command South

The way the wind is blowing.

First: From a US Marine Public Affairs Officer:
U.S. Senators visit Marines in Afghanistan
By 2ndLt Stewart M. Coles, Public Affairs Officer, SPMAGTF-A Public Affairs Office
Dec 8, 2008

CAMP BASTION [UK HQ in Helmand province], Islamic Republic of Afghanistan [the country's proper name] - U.S. Senators John McCain, Joe Lieberman and Lindsey Graham visited Marines with Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force - Afghanistan here Dec. 7 [note the Estonians at the preceding link, and see "Marines" here for more on the Task Force].

The senators also met with U.S. Army Brig. Gen. John Nicholson [emphasis added], ISAF Regional Command-South's deputy commander for stabilization, and Helmand Provincial Governor Gulab Mangal.

U.S. Military service members with SPMAGTF-A and British Royal [oops!] Army personnel briefed the senators on the progress and status of their areas of operations in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
Second, watch this NBC piece on Brig. Gen. John Nicholson and the expanding US role in the south:

More on the realities, here and here.

Here's a very interesting article at Strategy Page. The US Army computers-and-geeks unit that was in no small part responsible for defeating the IED campaign in Iraq has been moved to Af-stan.

Combine this with the large numbers of US Army and Marine Corps reinforcements coming in 2009...and you have good news for the Good Guys and the Afghan people; bad news for the "scumbags and despicable murderers". (Succinct description by Gen. Hillier sums up the Taliban and Al Qaeda quit well, eh?) 2009 ought to be an interesting year, to be ignored or twisted "comme d'habitude" by The Usual Suspects in the West's MSM.
