Real soliders are the CF's best PR

Case in point:

Sapper Jean-Phillipe Couture, on his first tour in Afghanistan, was first man in the breach, face to face with a threat he trained for a year to handle. Unruffled by the intense heat, the threat of small-arms fire and the very real possibility of a secondary device effect, he worked for a significant period. Finally, and over his objections, Sgt Bernier sent him back to the section’s armoured vehicle to rehydrate and rest so he would be alert for later tasks.

Spr Corey McCue went in to continue the job after a thorough briefing from his section mate. As the hours ticked by, Spr McCue worked his equipment, investigating every area that could possible contain a home-made bomb. He finally came to within two meters of the suspected device. He reported his findings to Sgt Bernier and returned to the vehicle.

When asked about how he felt to be within six feet of the enemy’s most effective weapon, he replied, “It was hot as hell and I could use a smoke. I just wanted to find the thing. Hey, what’d you do with the Doritos?” [Babbler's emphasis]

CEFCOM is doing a very smart thing by publishing stories written by typical CF members on its website. As a friend once said to me "the company of soldiers is a tonic to the soul." These are ordinary people like you and me, doing extraordinary things for an extraordinary cause, and their words and actions can't help but resonate with the Canadian population...if only Joe and Jane Canuck can hear of them.

More of this, please.
