Steve Staples and some usual suspects

St. Steve is part of an interesting slide-show from the Rideau Institute (check these folks out!) Fundraising Dinner, February 4, 2008.

Our media often present Mr Staples as an "expert" on Afghanistan and defence issues. Sometimes they may even describe his institute as, say, "left-leaning". But when one looks at the photos in the show above it's pretty clear there are real partisan (NDP) links. Why do not our media mention those?

Readers are invited to single out their favourite suspects from the photos. Mine is Paul Heibecker, an erstwhile career diplomat and former Canadian ambassador to the United Nations. Mr Heinbecker, who is often interviewed by our media, has some odd views, in my opinion.

H/t to a very good source.

Predate: Mr Heinbecker worries that Mr Harper's government may not have gained enough UN-love to win that treasured UNSC seat:

"The council decides on peace and war, it commands 100,000 troops..."
What tosh. Gosh, the Sudanese president must be shaking in his boots, faced with all that armed might. Jonathan Kay responded to Mr Heinbecker.

What the HELL was Keith Martin doing there? Lawrence Martin can at least pretend he was covering it as an ink-stained wretch, but not the doctor from Esquimalt.

I wonder who was taking these shots... some almost seem staged.
Ahh, I'm just being mean.

The Peace at any Price crowd having a nice little meeting.

Aren't they the smart ones, the better class of "intellectuals", the superior moralists of our times.

Byers is running next time in my riding. As much as I despise the LPC, I'll vote for Hedy "Crosses Burning" Fry just for the personal satisfaction of pissing on his parade.

A friend of mine, with considerable experience in national security and defence issues, commented privately:

"Shouldn't some competent authority have been carrying out a mass-arrest at this event?"

Jonathan is largely right about the security council, but this line "Everything of significance that the UN does is controlled by the five permanent members." is one of those things that drives me nuts about the UN bashers.

The UN does tons and tons of stuff that have bugger all to do with the SC, most of which have a much larger positive impact on people's lives than anything the SC has ever done.

as a buddy of Down East heritage just described it to me over lunch . . .

"if a**holes could fly, that Dinner would be a major airport".

Now think about how it sounds with a good Cape Breton twang.

A phrase of beauty. I can almost hear Hillier's version :)
