You want to be CDS...

Don't join the navy. The last time we had an Admiral in charge of the Canadian Forces was, oh, almost two decades ago - Admiral Anderson, I believe, and it was a brief stint at that!

No, I'm not bitter, I'm just saying there's a new 'Senior Service' in town and it's sea-green unstoppable. This is a field army forces, gents, backed by naval and air branch appendices. That's the new reality, folks. All you ambitious young lads out there, choose your military career wisely!

Well, the Army's been and is likely to continue to be, governments' service of choice to serve most foreign policy purposes. And its equipments, to do a good job, are cheap compared to those of the Navy and Air Force.

So, should that reality not govern defence policy? In other words, to repeat my phrase, the CF essentially as a mini-Marine Corps (see my comment here, the first), with effective support from the other services. Plus a coastal defence Navy with a capability to support, as part of a coalition, littoral operations of the Army. Plus an Air Force able to supply and support with some combat power, again as part of coalition actions, the Army on operations.

With a CF sovereignty, i.e. airspace protection, role, plus maritime surveillance to the extent that a combat capability seems to be required. Otherwise let that role be done by civilian agencies.

Yeah, last I heard, infantry don't get port visits, or the opportunity to get a drink at the mess after their watch is done, or the chick-magnet dress-whites...choose wisely indeed!
