"Close combat vehicle"
When I wrote this post I missed the suggestion of a second type of vehicle being acquired. I now have it from a very good source that the Army is considering getting, in addition to a LAV III replacement, a small number of tracked "Close Combat Vehicles" (or "Infantry Fighting Vehicles").
Here's one possibility:
Wow. Quite the big cat.
Another, cheaper, possibility:
Update: See an earlier Puma here--interestingly it's wheeled.

"very good source" hmmm
How's the running going for the companies involved in the UAV contract?
As an excellent general background info to this article and close combat vehicles, aka infantry fighting vehicles, there was an excellent program on them on the Military Channel on cable the other night.
Part of their Top Ten series, this particular episode was on the Top Ten Combat Vehicles. Starting at the one determined #10 (the Hummer), they spent several minutes talking about and showing old and new video on each combat vehicle, leading up to the #1. The ratings are on their historical significance as well as their specific capacities. Very interesting and very educational.
Unfortunately, this program isn't yet available as streaming video, as are some of the other Top Ten episodes. However, images and a summary are available at the Military Channel's website. The Top Ten Combat Vehicles.
