Neither can we just go 180 degrees and let the Pakistani Govt, ISI or Northwest Tribesmen do whatever the hell they want. It's a difficult, complex calculation but their collective feet must be held as close to the fire as possible to get the maximum amount of cooperation.
And let's not forget there is a large group of active or potential Pakistani allies.
They include relatively moderate, educated middle and upper class urban folks, businessmen, professional military, etc. who despise the Islamofascists as much as we do and no more want them in control of the Pakistani Government than we do. They see their strong self-interest lies in the defeat and destruction of Al Qaeda, Taliban and other Islamofascist elements in Pakistan.
