Literary review as an excuse to punditry

Robert Fowler doesn't think NATO can prevail in Afghanistan. He also thinks that since NATO countries don't have the will to commit to winning in Afghanistan, that we shouldn't even try.

Oh, and incidentally - and I mean incidentally - he reviews the Stein and Lang spin-job masquerading as a political history.

Read it if you must, but it's five minutes of your life you'll never get back.

Some pro-Fowler comment here (that I provoked).

I 'interacted' with Teflon Bob on one occasion and was not struck by his robust support for a traditional role for the Canadian Army. Mind you, he was DM Defense at the time.

When working, on secondment from External Affairs, as Current Intelligence Coordinator at the Intelligence Advisory Committee at the PCO, 1982-84, I once had occasion to see Rocket Robert. I can't remember the specifics of the occasion but he was rather lounging in his chair, with several apparent acolytes around him, making much of how much fun he was having in his job.

I might add that during this time there was a great to-do in Canada as to whether we should let the US test cruise missiles in Canada. I went to the PCO library and found this book, "Cruise Missiles: Technology, Strategy and Politics", which had been in the library some two years and never taken out. So I stole it and have it before me now. Good book too.
