Canadian defence spending compared to certain NATO members

These members spent more on defence per capita in 2004 than Canada ($US, Canada just under $300, figures extrapolated from chart):

Italy $320
Belgium $400
Luxembourg (!?!) $500
Netherlands $510
Denmark $560
Norway $850!!!

Read 'em and weep. At least in 1990 we beat Luxembourg. We've been "cheapskates" for quite a long time.

But not according to Stephen Staples of the Polaris Institute (see second page at this link)--one of the TV networks' favourite "defence experts".

Per capita defense spending is meaningless twaddle and is only dragged out by dishonest hacks. When it comes to military spending, only the bottom line counts.

... and buy Leopard 2A6, lots of them.

Heh. You can take the man out of the tank, but you can never take the tanker out of the man, eh? No matter what the cap-brass says.

I'm with you, though: the MBT is a lot more versatile a piece of kit than anyone credited even five years ago. And now that we're getting the means to move them where we need to, they're a good investment.

Are we? I didn't know we were getting An-124s.
