OK, Cameron. How about "I'm not sure I trust the reporter to properly describe the complex emotions he writes about in this piece, since I'm not sure he understands his uniformed military subjects well enough to read them properly."
He's talking about field promotions, confusing ranks with positions, ignoring positions within the normal chain of command. I have no doubt that he's reporting what he sees and hears as accurately as he can. I just don't think he understands it well enough to give a particularly accurate rendition.
I know sometimes it sounds like we don't like journalists around here. I can't speak for the other contributors, but for my part, my problem isn't with journalists, per se. It's with journalists reporting on stuff they don't understand as though they understand it.

It gives a distorted picture.
That's more precise, and it doesn't just sound like you don't like journalists..
