Whyever did we buy these submarines (or any subs at all)?

This really is becoming absurd.

The Defence Department has decided to delay repairing a fire-ravaged submarine until 2010, leaving the navy short by one vessel and raising concerns about whether the damaged boat will ever return to service...

"This will improve our ability to get Victoria and Corner Brook back into service and better position the navy to have two boats fully operational in 2009," the department said in a one-page statement released late Thursday.

Victoria and Corner Brook are also currently out of commission...

The Defence Department... said the repairs are expected to take two years to complete, putting the sub back in service by 2012...

We bought them because the US threatened to cut us off from intel gathered by their underwater sonar net. They claimed that since we didn't have any submarines, we didn't need the intel. We also bought them because a pack of idiots claimed they'd be just the ticket to stop illegal fishing in our waters and they'd defend our Arctic sovereignty.

robert: Good grief! I agree with you that the fisheries rationale is nonsense.

Actually, the reason a rank 5 or 6 navy has submarines is for water column management and sovereignty.

There is no doubt this is perhaps the worst submarine purchase in the history of the RCN, but that doesn't mean we don't need submarines to properly patrol well beyond our economic zones.

Robert: I'd be happy to go read any supporting facts you have for your comment.
