Some Media Tidbits

1) The CanWest story about how a program is helping war wounded deal with their newest challenges is a good one. That said, am I the only one thinking that one editor, in choosing a headline for the same article in another chain outlet (PDF of article), may have been a bit indelicate in choosing a headline (especially when the lead paragraph is about an amputee who lost a leg in an explosion)?
New program gives wounded Afghan vets a leg up
2) Canada's Task Force Afghanistan commander BGEN Jonathan Vance spends 20 minutes speaking to CBC Radio (.mp3) about the mission - about 2,900 words of conversation between host and guest, according to the transcript (PDF).

Reuters and Agence France-Presse produce follow-up stories based on said interview (with Al Jazeera picking up a snippet, too).

How much of the interview ended up in the follow-up stories? In the best case, 56 words - from the last answer of the interview. That's 2 per cent.

Keep that in mind when you're reading any stories where they use interviews on other media outlets as sources of information.

A bit more here and here.
