2009/09/Y2009-9FCF-01.jpgAir Force personnel across Canada will pay tribute to their fallen comrades during parades and memorial services the week of September 14 to 20, 2009 to commemorate the 69th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
The Battle of Britain was recognized almost immediately as a significant event. Waged from July to October 1940, it pitted a small group of fighter pilots from around the world against a far larger Luftwaffe. Their victory gave hope to the people of Great Britain and to other freedom-loving nations.
Of the 3,000 Allied air crew who flew in the battle, 103 were Canadian. Twenty three lost their lives between July and October, 1940 while 30 others made the supreme sacrifice later in the war. The Battle of Britain marked the first Nazi defeat of the Second World War and was the first campaign to be fought and won strictly in the air.
The national Battle of Britain ceremony in Ottawa will be held at the Canada Aviation Museum on Sunday, September 20, 2009 starting at 10:15. It will feature fly pasts by vintage aircraft, marchpasts by veterans and currently serving members of the Air Force, performances by the Central Band of the Canadian Forces, the Air Command Pipes and Drums, wreath laying, Reveille and two minutes of silence.
