You can always count on retired General Lewis MacKenzie to call it as it is. The sooner we begin having serious discussions about this the better. That way we can avoid all the political posturing and speechifying we're sure to face over the next several years.
Rational decisions need to be made based on real needs not political calculations and strategies.
Much has been made of the United Nations "responsibility to protect" - the duty to intervene in when national governments fail to fulfill their responsibility to protect their citizens from atrocious crimes. Such noble goals inevitably must be accomplished by boots on the ground, often at great cost. Rebuilding failed nation states is not an in and out in x amount of time job.

Canada will not abandon Afghanistan in 2011, no matter what the headlines suggest for the next two years.
