A new mission for our Hornets

Paying respect to the fallen (via Spotlight on Military News and International Affairs):
Low-flying planes honour guard for returning troops

OTTAWA — Residents on the city’s west-side were surprised Tuesday evening [May 5] by the sight of three low-flying planes: two fighters [must be from 425 Tactical Fighter Squadron, Bagotville] escorting a transport plane.

Last month, residents south of Ottawa were shocked by a similar sight. However, it’s not a cause for concern. It’s a sign of respect for troops returning home from Afghanistan.

“What we try to do every single time is meet them in the air with one or two CF-18s to say, ‘Welcome home and thanks for everything’,” Capt. Steve Neta, public affairs officer with One Canadian Air Division Headquarters, said after the April 14 incident fuelled concerns from people in Russell who witnessed one such honour escort.

“It’s our own way of giving them a pat on the back.”

Great picture.

Really great of them to do that . . . hope they'll escort all the way to Trenton where the Fallen's family members are waiting on the tarmac.

It would really mean something to them I think

That explains why the two CF-18Ms at Hamilton last weekend bolted to Trenton for an hour and then came back. Good find.
