St. John Goalie Honours 2 RCR

Goaltender shows patriotism on his hockey mask

Saint John, New Brunswick — If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the goalie mask of 18-year-old Karel St-Laurent of the Saint John Sea Dogs hockey team is a novel.

The mask tells the story of a devastating day in April 2007 for Hotel Company, 2nd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment (2 RCR). It also honours the life of a Saint John resident, Private David Greenslade.

Having a painted mask is a rite of passage for upper-tier goalies. Karel has always worn a blank (plain, white mask) until he made the Saint John Seadogs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Mr. St-Laurent heard the story of Pte Greenslade being killed in Afghanistan on Easter Sunday 2007 from team equipment manager David Kelly.

Talking to Pte Greenslade´s family, he learned five other 2 RCR soldiers also lost there lives that same day. He chose to honour the six by using the fallen soldier as the theme for his helmet.

"I loved the idea," said Mr. St-Laurent.

"I think we all need to support the troops and to know that there´s a guy [from Saint John] who was killed doing his job in defending this country; I wanted to paint my mask in his memory."

The mask will be donated to the Hockey Hall of Fame at the end of the season.
