Kukhris rule

We get by with a little help from our friends (h/t to milnewstbay):
Gurkhas honoured by Canada

Mr James Wright, the High Commissioner for Canada, presented a Canadian Forces Unit Commendation to the 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles (1RGR) at a special ceremony in Canada House, on London's Trafalgar Square, on Thursday 5 June 2008. The ceremony was attended by current serving and veteran Armed Forces Personnel from Canada and the UK.

Three Gurkhas, who were all badly injured by a roadside bomb during the later part of 1RGR's deployment to Afghanistan, and 1 RGR'S Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Johnny Bourne, accepted the gold-embossed scroll on behalf of their Battalion.

1RGR were deployed to Kandahar between October 2007 and March 2008. As the Battle Group responsible for operations around the Regional Command South, their role was to act as a highly mobile unit supporting other Task Forces in the area to carry out specific operations.

They worked with a variety of nationalities including Dutch and Romanian and a large amount of their operations were conducted with the Canadian Task Force.

Lt Col Johnny Bourne explained their role further:
"As a force we went in to hunt for the Taliban, and then we shaped the environment for other forces to come in and build up security and undertake development work.

"We went to a lot of areas around Kandahar, some where no coalition forces had been to before so we were really working on the edges. We gave the Task Force the ability to stretch and have real operational effect."

The Battalion was involved in significant war fighting and in some instances saw three solid days of fighting...
