CF Ombudsman

From David Pugliese's Defence Watch blog:
GEN. WALTER SEMIANIW TO BE THE NEW CF OMBUDSMAN?

I’m told that Maj.-Gen. Walter Semianiw is a front-runner candidate to be the new Canadian Forces Ombudsman. If he got the nod, he would replace Yves Cote who has already vacated the position after lasting 29 months in the job and then heading out for greener pastures at the Justice Department. Mr. Cote was appointed Associate Deputy Minister of Justice, effective January 7, 2008.
My initial gut reaction to this is that it's a bad idea, on several levels. There are many pros and cons to selecting a former general for this position but I think the perception of someone recently from the system holding this position strikes the wrong chord.

I'm in agreement with you, BBS. A big part of the job is the average CF member's perception of the office's impartiality. And having a recently retired MGen - read BIG BRASS - in the job won't foster that perception.

Even if Semianiw is willing to put the screws to his former colleagues where necessary, I doubt many will believe he'd be willing to. And that's a big problem.

Time to short-list someone else.
