Today's top stories...

"Startled observers at CFB Petawawa today noted the passage of a flock of what appeared to be winged pigs flying in V-formation over the base earlier this week. No explanation could be offered for the phenomenon.

In other news, a Canadian soldier previously decorated for valour for his actions in Afghanistan has been selected to receive a prestigious award from a German conference on security policy.

Reporting on the weird and the wonderful, this is Damian Brooks for WTF News."

What is it about this that makes it a "flying pigs" story? Are CFB Petawawa soldiers typically ignored for this kind of thing?

It's the fact that it's a German conference, offering recognition to a soldier.

I certainly mean no disrespect to Private O'Rourke, for whom I feel great respect for his valiant conduct that earned him an MMV.

That said, I just find it really incongruous that a decorated combat soldier be selected to be the symbolic representative to receive a "Peace Through Dialogue Medal".

IMO, Private O'Rourke's great personal contribution for peace was not by words but by deeds. By his distinguished combat service against the evil, oppressive Taliban, which is bent on killing and oppression. Sometimes peace can only be achieved by force of arms, such as is the case in Afghanistan.
