Hear, frickin' HEAR!

Full disclosure: I've known Tom Donnelly for a number of years, shared drinks with him and his lovely wife, and I like him. He's also a client of mine.

But even if I had no personal connection with him at all, I'd be applauding this idea he put to words in today's Ottawa Citizen:

Somewhere along the line, politicians thought it would be smart to start naming public facilities, parks, arenas or roads after themselves or former colleagues.

Elected officials should only have something named after them if they want to pay for it and donate it to the city with their own money.

Public assets and facilities should be named after people who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in serving the citizens of our community, province and nation.

...

I think any former politician alive who has something named after them should offer to take their name off whatever public asset bears it and make it available for a fallen soldier or police officer. These are the people who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. They are the heroes we should never forget.

I'd much rather see a public facility named after a soldier, a cop, or a fireman than any politician. This is a fantastic idea - I'm just amazed it took so long for someone to suggest it.

BZ, Tom.
