Québec and Afstan
This is encouraging:
A sign that Quebecers don't feel all that differently about the military than other Canadians is the rate at which they're joining it. The latest Canadian Forces figures show that Quebecers are joining up at the same rate as other Canadians, and that on a per-capita basis Quebec City is one of Canada's most fertile grounds for recruiting. And the chance of being sent to Afghanistan is more of an attraction than a deterrent, recruiting officers say...

I keep meaning to relate this anecdote, but my vociferously anti-American and Israeli foreign policy/military action mother-in-law (puré laine as the driven snow) seems to have only one real problem with the deployment in Afghanistan. She feels that the CF is doing too much of the heavy lifting combat wise and would like some of the other NATO countries to send more combat troops where are actually allowed to, you know, do some combat.
I don't have a problem with letting the other countries know we believe they should do more. I have a problem with us doing less in the event the other countries don't step up to the plate.
If you're fighting a forest fire, and your replacement doesn't show up after your shift is done, do you walk away from the fire and let it burn?
That's a fine annalogy, and probably apt, but the problem is that at some point our troops need rest and at some point (given their relatively limited numbers) someone has to step up and tell the truth "Hello fellow members of NATO, your reluctance to send combat troops is, in essence, dictating our foreign policy."
Oh, could you guys move the ads to a side bar? Because where they are sucks.
We're going through some format changes, Cam, and your patience is most appreciated. If you have suggestions, you're welcome to e-mail me.
Will do.
