Canadians serving in Iraq
I can't be sure of this, but it appears likely that the latest Canadian casualty in the "War on Terror" was killed in Iraq on Monday serving in the United States Army:
"Sgt. Michael T. Seeley, 27, of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, died Oct. 30 in Baghdad, Iraq, from injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Seeley was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas."
Now it's quite possible that Sgt Seeley married a Canadian, which is why he calls Canada home, but it's just as likely that he's a dual citizen. It would be interesting to know how many Canadians are currently serving with American forces, and how many of these have paid the ultimate price. Any idea how one would go about finding this out?

See my post here, and follow the link to Seeley's story.
As far as how to find out about Canadians in the U.S. military, I'd suggest e-mailing a U.S. PAO, although you might have to find one for each service.

Many Canadians who serve in Iraq serve as "Defence Contractors" as well, and I personally know of a couple Canadians who have done that.
And I would believe the number of Canadians who have served in Iraq would be high. I even know of an MP's son who has.
And I do remember a Canadian died in Iraq some time last year, with the Marines if I remember right.
This is a fascinating a story...I didn't know about Seeley. I'll feature it tmr on my blog. I'll give all credit to The Torch (and to Cupper for the additional information)
From the article:
"He fully believed that people were being hurt who shouldn’t be hurt and it was their job to protect them."
Brad, you're right...quite a few Canadian contractors risking their lives in Iraq these days.
Can I ask a question as a squeemish civilian?
Do all of you feel comfortable mixing "contractors" with soldiers?
Not sure what you mean, Cameron. Most 'contractors' or 'mercenaries' depending on your opinion of them were soldiers at some point. By mixing, do you mean mixing who we talk about on this blog, or do you mean mixing in the field?
